![]() Ryota is the point guard of the Shohoku High School Basketball team as they take on their toughest opponents yet, the champion team from Sannoh High. It follows our lead character Ryota Miyagi (Paul Castro Jr.). ![]() This film is directed by, written by, and based on the manga by Takehiko Inoue. This is why today’s review stands out, because when you really capture the heart and spirit of the sport and the drive of the characters to succeed in said sport, then you have something like the incredible The First Slam Dunk. There should be more animated films that have sports as a main pull, because we don’t have many, and the ones we have aren’t always stellar. If you go into the live-action scene, you can find many iconic sports movies. There is a reason why there are only a few well-known sports anime that are considered iconic. You would think the combination of sports and animation would result in some truly fantastic storytelling, but even when put into a TV show, depending on the production pipeline, they turn out to be lackluster. Now, if we wanted to talk about sports-centric anime, we could talk about them all night and day. We don’t talk a lot about sports films in the animation scene.
